[Other] - Enhancing the 2D Map with Global Traffic for a more "Alive" Experience

:bullseye: What is your suggestion?
I would like to suggest a feature to enhance the 2D world map. Currently, the map only displays the player’s own fleet and their partners’ aircraft, which can feel somewhat empty. My idea is to display “Randomized Global Traffic” on the map—showing aircraft from other active players flying between the available airports in the game (e.g., IAD, LHR, BKK, HKG, SYD, etc.).

:hammer_and_wrench: How would it work in the game?
• Real-time Sampling: The game doesn’t need to show every single aircraft from every player. Instead, it can randomly “sample” a portion of active flights from players worldwide.

• Visual Representation: These flights would appear as aircraft icons moving across the 2D map, similar to how we see traffic on Flightradar24.

• Specific to In-game Airports: To keep it relevant, the displayed traffic should only consist of routes between the airports currently available in World of Airports.

• Non-Interactive: These “Ghost” flights would be purely visual to maintain performance. Players wouldn’t need to manage them; they are there to create a realistic atmosphere.

:balance_scale: Why is this a good idea?

• Immersive Atmosphere: It transforms the 2D map from a static interface into a “Living World.” It feels like a real global aviation network that never sleeps.

• Visual Engagement: Watching various airlines and aircraft models (MD11, B788, A350) crisscrossing the globe is exciting and reduces boredom during wait times.

• Sense of Community: Even when playing alone, seeing other players’ traffic makes you feel connected to the wider World of Airports community.

• Professional Feel: It aligns the game closer to real-world aviation tools that fans love, like Flightradar24, adding a layer of “Pro” simulation to the experience.

Hey Unif, here’s my take on it. It takes the player out of the core gameplay into a separate view of global traffic. It feels like a standalone feature instead of part of the main game.

Where this would work better is if the game itself were an airline network management sim where features affect decisions, strategy, or rewards around flight routes and such, but WOA is an airport management sim.

With that said, I believe this feature can still work if we limit it to routes between in game airports and keep it non interactive, serving only as background visual traffic for immersion rather than gameplay impact, like you already said.

This is just my humble opinion, and I would like to hear from you and others about your thoughts on it.

I totally see your point, and I agree—WoA is definitely an airport management sim at its heart.

My idea isn’t to change the mechanics or add complex airline management. It’s really just about the atmosphere. Right now, the 2D map feels a bit static, and having that non-interactive background traffic (like you suggested, limited to in-game routes) would make the world feel much more ‘alive’ and connected.

For me, it’s all about that extra layer of immersion without touching the core gameplay.

Yeah, that direction makes sense. I can see how that would help the map feel less static.
