Question for the mods regarding Varig

I’ve made a few Varig posts now and have been using the VRN ICAO code for my posts, but noticed another forum user using VRG as the ICAO on their post regarding the MD-11. Was going to change this and update but decided to do a little digging and Wiki uses VRG and I found a post for some plane site called Volanta asking them to change the ICAO to VRG, as well as some articles here and there. It seems they used VRG but then also VRN is assigned but I just don’t know . Is Planespotters incorrect or does it just not matter in the long run.

Sorry for the post and thanks

That’s a flight Sim I’m pretty sure, that post could’ve been referring to a VA

I believe that planespotters is wrong on this one. Afaik it should be VRG and most sources indicate as much. Avcodes has a nifty tool that can let you verify such information and I believe they hook directly into ICAO’s API so it should be accurate.

Following up, I raised the question with planespotters. They got back to me and explained that they use VRN because after Varig ceased operations in 2006 they split off into two separate legal entities and the “new” Varig which had the rights to use the Varig brand that GOL ended up purchasing, used ICAO code VRN until the brand in its entirety stopped flying in 2008. Varig pre-2006 thus used VRG.

So for recommending anything ‘new’ Varig I should use the VRN? or just use VRG for the lot to not cause any confusion if they’re added. Thanks for clarifying, spent about half an hour traipsing through google and never thought to ask the guys who run the site. Did think it was odd they’d make such a mistake but I should’ve been assured that those lads did their research .

I think in general use VRG but it’s acceptable to use VRN as well for new Varig
