Purpose or Role in Game
Military transport aircraft retired in 2006 and replaced with C-17 which has a similar payload
Why should this aircraft be added?
The C-141 is a piece of military history, serving alongside the more famous C-5 Galaxy from 1965 until the last one was retired in May 2006. It would be a good aircraft for US playable airports and to operate out of bases that already house the C-17 and C-130. Plus it had a host of liveries during its time with the USAF and was also a regular visitor to Antarctica which could make it a fun event at SCL.
Airlines that use it
USAF,NASA (Operated 1 A variant which was the Lockheed demonstrator. Was used for housing the Kuiper Airborne Observatory telescope which was retired in 1995 when the SOFIA was brought into use),
Special characteristics or variants
It is a cargo and passenger carrying military aircraft comparable to its successor the C-17 Globemaster III.It came in 3 variants the original A variant, capable of carrying 154 passengers or 28,400kg of freight or 10 standard pallets which was loaded and unloaded through the tail door. This variant however was found to have a total ‘bulk out’ weight well below the airframe’s ‘gross out’ weight which meant that the aircraft didn’t have the cargo capacity due to size but could carry a lot more cargo based on its lift capacity. 284 were built to this spec.
This was amended with the B variant which was stretched by 7.11m and allowed it to carry 205 passengers or 13 standard pallets. All 270 remaining C-141’s were stretched between 1977 and 1982.
A and B together,
The C variant was an upgrade in the 1990s for a new digital glass flight deck, TCAS and GPS as well as improving reliability but visually had no difference to the B.
