Mid-size single-runway international airport, 8M passengers in 2024, nearly 11M in 2018, can accommodate the A380;
Facilities expansion project Phase II is underway with Japanese assistance, with completion delayed until 2026 or 2027, which will include e. g. new maintenance and repair facilities or a new multi-storey car park. Construction of the new Terminal 2 with two piers, that would replace the current Terminal 1 as the airport’s primary international terminal, has been halted since 2022 due to poor economic situation in Sri Lanka. A tender is currently underway by JICA to select a new contractor to finish the full scope of the project, including the Terminal 2. The contractor could be appointed as soon as this December.

To provide more airports in the Indian Ocean region, along with the generic CNN, as well as to bridge the distance between MCT and BKK, allowing for more player connections
