Daniel K. Inouye Int’l Airport - PNHL/HNL
Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.
Public / Military - Major international hub with 4 runways. Serves approx. 300K operations a year, including ~21M pax and ~660K tons of cargo (which might not even include military and mil contracted cargo). Runways, taxiways, and ramps/gates support up to C5s, A124s, A380s, and even A225 when she existed.
It’s a good stepping stone between player airports in North/South America and Asia as it’s located part way across the Pacific. It’s a hub for Hawaiian Airlines, Asia Pacific Airlines, and Aloha Air Cargo to name a few. In addition to heavy international passenger traffic using B747s and A388s, it’s also a heavily used USAF/USN joint military base (Pearl Harbor and Hickam AFB), with frequent C17s, C5s, and even Air Force One. They also have many touring helicopter companies, which could be a clickable Easter egg in that area! Lastly, it’s a very iconic location due to its Hollywood famous tropical paradise vacation spot reputation and historic WW2 importance.
Major Airlines include Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, Al Nippon Airways, American Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, Jetstar, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, West Jet, Aloha Air Cargo, Amazon Air, Asia Pacific Airlines, Atlas Air, DHL Aviation, FedEx Express, Kalitta Air, Qantas Freight, UPS Airlines, and many more! The destinations are too many to list, but it’s a lot.
The airport is quite unique in its layout, as it has double parallel runways and 3 separate ramp areas for pax, military, and cargo, giving it a large footprint. In fact, it covers over 1% of the total land area of the island, and it’s not exactly a tiny island, home to over 1M people! It also has two water runways for amphibious use. Lastly, it has a unique South runway built on artificially reclaimed land atop an old coral reef, affectionately coined the “Coral Runway”, and has an interesting route for taxi.
