About The Airport
Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (IATA: ICT, ICAO: KICT, FAA LID: ICT) is a commercial airport 7 miles (11 km) west of downtown Wichita, Kansas, United States. It is the largest and busiest airport in Kansas. Located south of US-54 in southwest Wichita, it covers 3,248 acres (1,314 ha) and contains three runways. The airport is also referred to as Eisenhower National Airport or by its former name Mid-Continent Airport. The airport code, ICT, is also a nickname for the city. It was known as Wichita Mid-Continent Airport from 1973 until 2014, when it was renamed in honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States from 1953 to 1961. His boyhood home, museum, and Presidential Library are at the Eisenhower Presidential Center in Abilene, Kansas. The name change was approved by the City of Wichita in May 2014, and made official by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on November 13, 2014. The airport’s current passenger terminal opened on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
About The City
Wichita has a long history in aviation. Dating back to the 1920s and 1930s when iconic aircraft manufacturers like Laird, Stearman, Cessna and Beechcraft were established in the city, earning it the nickname “Air Capital of the World” in 1928. There are airports named for some of these people, including: Beech Factory Airport (BEC), Cessna Aircraft Field (CEA), and Lloyd Stearman Field (1K1). By the 1940s, Wichita was producing an impressive 67 percent of U.S. general aviation aircraft. The first commercial airport in the city was the Wichita Municipal Airport (current McConnell AFB (IAB)). It is now the site of the Kansas Aviation Museum. Today, Wichita boasts more than 450 aerospace companies and suppliers, including Textron Aviation, Beechcraft, Cessna, Bombardier Learjet, Spirit AeroSystems and Airbus and has the third largest concentration of aviation workers in the country. The city is also home to prestigious institutions such as Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) and National Center for Aviation Training. Wichita’s accolades include being the nation’s highest volume producer of aircraft since 1929, with 35 percent of all general aviation planes built in the U.S. delivered from Kansas. [1] If you have ever flown on a Boeing 737, the fuselage was built by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita, before being transported by rail to Seattle for final assembly. On that note, Kansas is important to the railroads as well, with Atchison being the birthplace of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. There is still passenger rail service in the state, with Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passing through Topeka, Lawrence, Newton, Hutchinson, Dodge City, and Garden City. Today, parts for Boeing planes are shipped by rail from Wichita to Seattle. Isn’t it amazing how all these forms of transportation are connected?
Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
Could be another generic airport, adds more regional routes, lots of GA planes, Beechcraft and Cessna factories spread throughout the city (some Boeing presence also)

Smaller airport, would be great for general aviation if that is addedLike some other airports in the US, the Wichita National Weather Service office is located on airport property, just west of the end of RWY 14.
