The terminal was built to support 7.5M pax/year but in 2024 handled 8.6M. Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
It was opened in 1974 after the loss of the previous main airport Nicosia, built on the site of an old RAF airfield first constructed in the 1930s. It is a strategic spot between Europe, Russia and the Middle East serving in the past as a major hub for stopover flights. It would allow for diverse operations for short haul aircraft operating from Europe, Africa and Asia creating an interesting mix.
