Large international airport with 4 runways (18C/36C, 18L/36L, 18R/36R, 9/27). As of 2024, it serviced 4.87 million passengers. Primarily a cargo hub, it handled 8.278 billion pounds of cargo (3.754 billion kg) in 2024. It is the busiest cargo airport in the western hemisphere by tons as of 2024, and the third busiest cargo airport in the world.
Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
Memphis is home to the FedEx Superhub, a massive facility that handles most of FedExโs cargo, as well as being their base of operations. Due to this, it would get lots of cargo that would be shipped both around the US and worldwide, being a cargo hub to facilitate short-haul cargo operations around the Americas, and be a good counterpart for the cargo airport at Leipzig.
It is also a hub for Southern Airways Express, a local airline subsidized by the USDoT, and home to the Memphis Air National Guard Base, which is the home of the 164th Airlift Wing of the Tennessee ANG.
