[Other] - Airport Operational Events

:bullseye: What is your suggestion?
I think World of Airports could feel a lot more alive if airports occasionally had small operational events that the player has to react to.
At the moment, once you understand the basic mechanics, most flights follow the same pattern:
Land → assign stand → ground handling → pushback → departure.
I think it would be interesting if, from time to time, something unexpected happened during normal operations.
Not something that happens constantly or makes the game frustrating, but small situations that make every session a little different.
For example:

  • A flight arrives later than expected.
  • A stand takes longer to become available.
  • A ground vehicle temporarily becomes unavailable.
  • An aircraft needs a short additional inspection before departure.
  • A taxiway is temporarily restricted.
  • A gate needs to be changed because another aircraft is still occupying it.
  • A flight has to wait for a specific ground service before continuing.

:hammer_and_wrench: How would it work in the game?
These events could appear randomly but with a relatively low frequency.
When something happens, the game could simply show a small notification explaining the situation and the estimated delay.
For example:

:construction: Taxiway temporarily restricted
A taxiway is temporarily unavailable.
Estimated reopening: 6 min.

The important part would be that the player can react to the situation, instead of the event simply being an automatic penalty.
For example, if a gate is unavailable, the player could:

  • Wait for the original gate.
  • Assign another available gate.
  • Use a remote stand, if available.
If a ground vehicle is temporarily unavailable, the player could decide which aircraft should receive the available equipment first.
The events could also affect the following operation of an aircraft. If a flight arrives late or its turnaround takes longer than expected, its next departure could also be delayed.

:balance_scale: Why is this a good idea?
I think this would make World of Airports feel less predictable without making it unnecessarily complicated.
Real airports don’t operate exactly the same way every time. Small delays, equipment problems, gate changes and unexpected situations are part of normal airport operations.
Right now, once you learn the mechanics, many operations can become quite repetitive.
Having occasional operational events would make the player react and make decisions, instead of simply repeating the same sequence for every aircraft.
It could also make busy airports more interesting, because a small problem could create a situation where the player has to reorganize a few gates or prioritize certain aircraft.
The goal wouldn’t be to make the game harder just for the sake of difficulty, but to make the airport feel more dynamic and less robotic.

At first I was going to ask if you’ve even played the game. Because you’re asking for some things that are already in the game.
But then I remembered the Scheduler. And my advice to you is to use it. That, combined with what’s already in-game, will absolutely mess up your operations (it’s a feature, not a bug). :+1:

After an aircraft has vacated it? A streetsweeper shows up? You just select another gate.

They don’t. But it’s like having one too few, so you just buy an extra one.

This already happens in game, sometimes a flight needs a technical inspection.

The taxi(way)system is one of the hardest parts of creating an airport. Adding random blockages that throw that off is not likely to be made.

This is core game already. You wait or you buy more.

Haha, fair point. I actually appreciate the correction.

I didn’t realize some of those things were already handled by the game in that way, especially the Scheduler and the existing technical assistance events.

I’m still learning some of the deeper mechanics of WoA, so this was partly based on what I’ve experienced so far rather than knowing every system in detail.

I’ll definitely give the Scheduler a proper try before suggesting more changes. Thanks for pointing that out!
