that looks very modern (and kinda looks like a modernized version of innsfeld terminal)
If it’s of interest, this is the May 2025 drawn up plans for the airport.
thanks! its very interesting (exept for my 1FPS
)
Yeah, this version of IAD will explode older phones. Luckily its a long way off so maybe we’ll see it in the 2040 update
, when we’ve all updated to the iPhone 103.
Or maybe apple went bankrupt… ![]()
But five runways would be very good for narrowbodies, for HKG I have to go a widebody heavy strategy. ![]()
Looks very spectacular
It’s coming to life! Hopefully if the Devs implement the new terminal, they can fix the gates at the A/B adding MARS gates with the ability to handle C gates (rn I don’t have anywhere for the aer lingus a21nx to land lol) and the C/D terminal adding some E gates (rn I have to handle the united B789/B772 at the A/B terminal
)
Gone through the plan myself (while having to deal with a funny internet connection for some bizarre reason), I’m curious on what’s their timeline for their fifth runway as by the looks of it, they won’t be starting it anytime soon.
Does appear to be a way out if at all. It’s the only section that grey and dotted which tends to indicate it’s planned but It was approved at the same time the fourth runway was in 2005 so they’re allowed to go ahead but I reckon it’ll be after the terminals are expanded and traffic has increased.

Totally agree. Here’s how I understand it to work at IAD IRL:
All United narrow and widebodies handle at the C/D terminal, but there is not option for E, D, or F class stands on the C/D terminal in game. Vice versa, all other airlines handle the A/B terminal including other airline narrow bodies, but their is no C class stand options for the A/B terminal. That causes some unrealistic placement for airlines in game. So I would support a change to stand classes here. I hope the info provided here is proper, I am not an expert.
I am sure the devs will update IAD again in time and implement shared stands like irl. They mentioned this in a recent update they gave on the forum here.
I made some designs a while ago about this topic (Back in 3.2.1). Some of the stand sizes are probably inaccurate but they can always be changed. I also did not do the remote stands, Cargo stands and the small A/B sized stands a the end of the north terminal, I only did the main ones.
Hope this helps for future development!
Other – Give IAD another realism pass (stand categories + stuck vehicles)
What is your suggestion?
Give IAD another realism pass. It used to be my favorite airport in the game (and it’s a great airport in real life), and the rework the devs did made it a lot more realistic. But as the game-wide remaster picks up pace, I can’t help feeling IAD may now have become the least realistic airport in the game. Three things stand out:
- Add Category C stands at the international terminal. Right now it has none, even though in reality plenty of Category C international flights park there.
- Open up United’s dedicated terminal to more aircraft categories. Right now it only accepts Category C, which is nothing like the real thing, where everything from United’s regional jets up to large aircraft like the 777-300ER uses that terminal.
- Fix the ground vehicles stuck inside building models. Even after the rework, quite a few of them are still clipped into buildings, and as far as I can tell this hasn’t been fixed.
How would it work in the game?
None of this needs new UI or mechanics; it’s mostly an adjustment to the existing map and stand data:
-
International terminal: convert or add a few stands so they accept Category C aircraft alongside the larger stands already there, so Category C international flights can be assigned to that terminal.
-
United terminal: make the stand sizes a mix, with some for regional jets, most for Category C, and a few that can take widebodies like the 777-300ER, so United’s regional and widebody flights can actually park there.
-
Vehicle bug: check the vehicle paths and spawn points around the affected buildings so they stop ending up inside the models.
From the player’s side, nothing changes except that flights get parked where they would park in real life.
Why is this a good idea?
Realism, mainly. IAD is a major real-world hub with a very distinctive terminal setup, and right now the stand categories at both terminals are almost the reverse of how it works in real life. The remastered airports have set a high bar (LHR, for example, is less efficient than IAD but already very true to life), and it would be great to see IAD brought up to that standard.
It also matters for how much people play it. IAD is extremely efficient, and I’m a United frequent flyer myself in real life, but I’ve barely played it this year and have been spending my time at LHR instead. I doubt I’m the only one. I still keep hoping IAD can get closer to the real thing, so if anyone knows whether the devs have something like this planned, I’d love to hear it, and I’m curious what everyone else thinks too.
This has already been suggested here: https://forum.worldofairports.com/t/other-improve-iad-stand-layout/23734?u=nomansland
Not just that but all airports will be remodeled eventually
Just a matter of patience
Maybe you can report the vehicles issue in the Bugs category in this forum if you haven’t already.
True, I just checked that post, and it actually has some really detailed takeaways and suggestions for improvement.
Merged @Safari 's post here as this post already has multiple discussions done already and has a better explanation (in terms of stand images)
This is really good!!! but one question?
Did the main terminal stands always have jet bridge access, because last i checked / played IAD, they were bus locations for loading on and offramps.
