PHX - Phoenix Sky Harbor 🇺🇸

:round_pushpin: Airport Name and ICAO/IATA Code
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (ICAO: KPHX / IATA: PHX)

:globe_showing_europe_africa: Location (City, Country)
Phoenix, Arizona, USA

:chart_increasing: Airport Type & Size
3 runways, 2 large terminal buildings (Terminal 3 & 4, where is 1 & 2?), 3 large cargo stands, air national guard station and small private aviation. Can land 747-8 and A380 at the airport. Unsure on AN225.

:vertical_traffic_light: Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
American Airlines hub, Frontier and Southwest heavily use it too. Big airport for the American South East and Arizona’s main entry and exit point. Currently has a new terminal currently being planned. 48 million people used the airport in 2023 and in 2022 the airport was the busiest 3 runway airport in the world. One of the USA’s quickest growing cities.

:world_map: Unique Features or Challenges
Hottest city in USA, all 3 runways are parallel and would making landings and takeoffs very quick, but long taxi time especially considering the terminals are lumped at the east end of the airport.

Reminds me of a smaller DFW, definitely like this, i think for the US of A however, a midwestern airport or Hawaii or alaska would be more probable

I feel these mid size airports are more feasible. As much as my brand new iPad can run the big airports happily, a lot of people’s equipment cannot and the big airports like JFK, Beijing and Amsterdam, as much as I’d love to see them, might ostracise some of the players. Plus I do like an airport where I can get a lot landed quickly and due to the terminal size, looks full.

I’d also add that while this isn’t a hub for Denver Air Connection, they do fly two routes from here:

Pheonix > Cortez, CO > Denver, CO – Dornier 328JET
Pheonix > Telluride, CO > Denver, CO – Fairchild Metro 28

These would be great small airline routes with small planes that aren’t seen in many places in the USA.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to play PHX in game, but I think the lack of E and F stands would probably would be seen as a problem for the fleet builder players in the community. Therefore i think that combined with the domination of American and Southwest airlines IRL makes it unlikely to be picked for the game, sadly. However it does have multiple runways and a nice cargo area which would be great in game to play.

Welcome to the forum!! And I completely agree, I did it merely because it hadn’t been done and is a more interesting airport than some others. Personally would like to see Minneapolis as another US airport, IAD is your United hub and MSP can be your Delta hub, as well as allowing Northwest to have its old home again. It also would put an airport in the North to tick all 4 points of the US. Either that or Memphis or Lousville for a LEJ in the US.

I’m one of these “fleet builder” types in the game, and I have to say… I want more airports that encourage me to build my fleets differently without having to set my own rules lessening their effectiveness in the process. I’ve earned SO much currency that at this point earning more matters very little and so I want more quirks.

That said – I do think that the domination of American and Southwest Airlines, while fine, makes me lean towards the game not being ready for this airport. If this was to be released, I think that it needs to come with some additional airlines whose planes we don’t have in game:

  • Denver Air Connection (Dornier 328JET & Fairchild Metro 28)
  • Advanced Airlines (Dornier 328JET, Pilatus PC-12, & King Air 350)
  • Air Southwest Express (Cessna Grand Caravan)

These airlines fly planes that are already in the game but I’m unsure if the airline and livery is in WoA yet, and would also be needed to add life to the airport beyond the major US airlines and the few international options in the game.

  • Contour Airlines (E130s/140s, CRJ2)
  • Porter Airlines (E295 & DH8D)
