Airport Name and ICAO/IATA Code
Raleigh Durham International Airport (ICAO: KRDU/ IATA: RDU)
Location (City, Country)
Raleigh, North Carolina, United States
Airport Type & Size
RDU is North Carolina’s second largest airport. In 2025 it served around 15 million passengers. It can handle A through E size planes and has a lot of domestic traffic and growing international traffic. It has two main runways and a smaller third runway for general aviation traffic. Two terminals and a cargo area. It already has plans for a new runway and terminal expansion within the next decade.
Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
While close to IAD this is a smaller airport that still offers a lot of aircraft movement and has plenty of international destinations. Would cater to those who like both larger and smaller airports.
Major Airlines & Routes
Example: Focus city for Delta airlines and operating bases for Breeze and Endeavor Air. American Airlines has a large presence as well. International airlines /routes include: American to LHR, Air France to CDG, Lufthansa to FRA, Aer Lingus to Dublin, Air Canada, AreoMexico, Copa Airlines, Iceland Air, and several others.
Unique Features or Challenges
Doesn’t have the most challenges but does have a few snowy days a winter. In its current state, only a limited number of wide body stands so managing larger planes and international flights is a current challenge.
