Airport Name and ICAO/IATA Code
San Diego International Airport - New T1 (ICAO: KSAN / IATA: SAN)
Location (City, Country)
San Diego, CA, USA
Airport Type & Size
Busiest single runway airport in the US, supports A380s, 25M pax/year
Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
A new Terminal 1 is opening later this year, and I’m hoping this is the right way to request this. Mainly it would be nice to have the game be up to date. We could do a like-for-like swap of the current 19 gates of existing Terminal 1 for the 19 New T1 gates, perhaps with the future 11 gate expansion (which will be constructed partially on the footprint of the existing terminal 1) as a new unlockable
Major Airlines & Routes
Southwest, Alaska and other US carriers, with a handful of international routes
The masterplan of new SAN T1, only the 19 gates on the right in this phase (you can see a line splits that in the middle). Seeming to be 1 E and 18 C gates? Don’t know about remote stands but could be 2 E?
Judging from images, we will get quite a few new E gates, looks like around 6. Also WoA Devs are typically quite generous and give extra D/E/F stands if they fit in the area
I assume if they were to include the new terminal it would be the whole thing, would save them spending extra time on taxi-ing routes for each individual phase, they’ve done it before with the new Muscat terminal
Well, remember this terminal is for the domestic flights already served by T1, which are only ever C and smaller… so maybe it would open opportunity for domestic wide body? But for international it’d need a customs area like T2
The new San Diego Terminal 1 (phase 1) has just opened to the public on the night of September 22nd! Bumping this topic to hopefully rejuvenate some momentum for this project to be added into the game in the future!
What happens to the old terminal 1? It’s a huge gap between the new terminal to terminal 2. It’s my understanding that terminal 2 and 3 are staying put.
The old cargo terminal gets moved to the other side of the runway.
The new Terminal 1 is replacing the old one, and once construction is complete the original Terminal 1 will be fully demolished. The next phase now consists of demolishing the old terminal 1 and creating another attachment to the existing new terminal 1 which will add an additional 11 gates. That’s why there’s that big gap between the new structure and Terminal 2 right now. Terminal 2 is staying as it is, and there actually isn’t a Terminal 3 at SAN, just Terminals 1 and 2. The cargo facilities are also planned to be relocated to the north side of the runway along the Pacific Highway side.
@sladebuck Not necessarily! The next phase of Terminal 1 that adds 11 additional gates isn’t slated for completion until 2028, which is still a long way off! But the new Terminal 1 is already operational, and there are plenty of improvements that could be made to the current SAN layout in the game to better reflect real-world operations and give players more room to expand.
I do think the developers may hold back on major redesigns until the full project is complete, but I’m optimistic they could still make updates in the meantime, like opening the north side apron for additional cargo and private jet contracts in the future. So while we may not see a full overhaul right away, there’s still potential for meaningful updates. And with the new Terminal 1 (19 gates) already open, I could definitely see it being considered by the team once updated satellite imagery becomes available, well before 2028!
I’m going to reference an image below highlighting in orange of areas that could be potentially implemented/improved from the current in game San Diego International Airport!
You’re wrong. If they could build all of Muscat, why not do it with San Diego? And I think they’ll do the same with Hong Kong. Why not build it completely, like they did with those airports?
Just to clarify, I never said we’re guaranteed to see updates before construction finishes in 2028. My last post was only speculation, ideas of what could be done in the meantime. But I fully expect major updates won’t happen until final construction is complete.
I’m not saying that you guarantee it, I’m saying that developers go further and always finish the airports as planned with constructions that may be in future plans, c As happened with Muscat, and now the new terminal in Hong Kong, which will be the same, they will never leave an airport half-finished, and then add what still needs to be built, if at some point they update San Diego I know they will build it completely.
