Airport Type & Size
Regional international airport with a single runway 09/27 (3.000 x 45 meters). It primarily supports narrow-body aircraft (like the B737 and A320 families) but is fully certified for wide-body operations. (Historicaly it operated the An-225 and the 747) The airport can operate even the Antonov family plane, but cannot operated the A380.
Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
This airport will be an intresting add to the game for some reason: It has 1 runway long 3,000 meter / 1,86 miles, being 45 meters / 150 ft it can operate evry in-game airplane except for the A380, in some special case the airport should be able to operate the An-225, like it happend in Real-life. It would also be a good add to the game due to the proximity with INN and the future ZRH, wich can make some intresting choose to the player.Why it can be better than other airport in game?
This Airport would be a mix of INN, BRI, CNN and SXM, TRS.The airport is better than the other airports listed for the following reasons:
- Is better than INN because it can operate bigger plane, and its location is better respect INN;
- Is better than BRI because the Taxiing is faster for Landing, especially because the plane after landing doesn’t have to do all the runway to arrive to the stand;
- Is better than SXM because it doesnt have to do backtracking and can operate biggre plane.
- Is better than CNN because it would operate bigger plane, and it have some very cool locking stand (ike BRI).
Airport Layout
Runway 09/27 is the operational hearts of Trieste Airport, It’s dimesion are “3,000 x 45 meters, or 1.86 miles x 150 feet” make it one of the longest and most versatile runways in Northern Italy.
09 - Is used for landing by all the type of plane, the airport use 09 for landing for 2 simple reason: 1. The “Carso” It is a rocky limestone plateau between Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, wich in the direction of runway 027 is too high for plane of big size (B737, A320, ecc.) to land from there; 2. There are the buildings of Ronhci dei Legionari, the city where TRS is located, some buildings are too high for let plane land from there. Despite this, there are some exceptions, like for example small private plane (Personally I see this only 1 time).This runway is even used for take off of all the medium and small sized plane, when another aircraft is heading the airport.
27 - it is used some times for Take-off, sometimes, when another plane is landing or incoming to the Airport, all the departure plane take-off from 09 in the direction of 27, In real life, the 27 is used for the take-off of wide-bodies.
Landing
Take Off :
Taxiway
The taxiways (or taxiways) are the “avenues” that connect the apron to runway 09-27. In Trieste Airport’s layout, the system is designed to be linear and without complex intersections, minimizing the risk of runway incursions .
- Taxiway A - Main Taxiway, this is a taxiway parallel to the runway that runs along almost its entire length on the north side. (It’s the one in the photo up here
)
Stands
The main apron is divided into approximately 10-12 (depend on how they get shared) main stands for commercial aviation, located parallel to the terminal. With many shared stands.
Many TRS stands are configured to allow aircraft (especially smaller ones or turboprops) to enter and exit autonomously in a turn, without pushback. (like in BRI). For some stands, in front of the Terminal, theres a Nose-in Configuration, here the plane nedd the pushback.
In the whoe airport there are only 2 Jet-Bridge, for the stands that aren’t in front of the Terminal, where the passenger walk to the plane, the passenger are transported with some Airport Bus/Shutle to their plane (the stands are B-C-D shared).
There are mainly 2 stand for C-D-E-F plane for both Cargo and passenger , in the South-West part of the airport, that are also shared standes, where can be put u to 4 C-class plane mainly for passenger but also for cargo.
The North part of the Airports stand are divided in 2 section:
Private or small plane (A and B class shared)
Medium size and small size plane (they’r also B-C-D shared)
The last part of the stand are situated on the right side of the Airports, where usualy are situated small and medium sized plane (B-C shared)![]()

Flight Aid System
Trieste Airport’s Flight Aid System (or radio aids) is the set of technologies that allows planes to land and take off safely, even when visibility is poor (fog or heavy rain) or at night.
ILS - Instrument Landing System, It is the most important system, positioned on Runway 09 (the one used for landings from West to East).Trieste has a Category 1 ILS, which allows landing with a horizontal visibility of approximately 550 meters.
PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicator,These are the four lights you see on the side of the runway during landing. They work with a color system based on the pilot’s viewing angle.
ALS - Approach Light System, In front of Head 09, on the ground outside the runway, there is a long series of high-intensity white lights.
VOR - VHF Omnidirectional Range, It provides the pilot with the direction (radial) to the airport.
DME - Distance Measuring Equipment, It provides the exact distance in nautical miles between the aircraft and the airport.
AWOS - Automated Weather Observing System, It’s not a navigation aid in the strict sense, but it’s essential. It’s a network of sensors along the runway that measures: 1.RVR, 2.Wind and 3.Athmospheric pressure.
ATC - Air Traffic Control Tower
The tower is located centrally on Runway 09-27, slightly west of the passenger terminal.
In Trieste, the service is managed by ENAV (Ente Nazionale Assistenza al Volo)Several people work within the agency, dividing up the tasks:
- TWR Controller, Manages the runway and the airspace immediately surrounding it;
- GND Controller, It manages everything that moves on taxiways and aprons;
- DEL (Delivery), At heavily trafficked airports, this position gives initial flight plan (route) clearances before the engines are started.
Elifriulia/Helicopter Service
The Elifriulia area is located in the western section of the airport grounds, separate from the main passenger terminal. It is a very important technical and operational area because it is home to one of Italy’s oldest helicopter service companies.
It can be found Between the ATC and the Airport Fire Dept.
It can be implemented as a occasional helicopter departure like it happend at INN and at BRI.
Ground Veichle Parcking
Many of the times, all the Vehicle of the ground crew are parcked on the side of the stands, but they actually have a covered parcking zone.
The difference between the other airport is that when you enter for seeing/buy the ground crew vehicle (like shuttle, Ambulift, fuel truck, cargo loader, ecc.) it will be with half of the bulding or the “door” opened with the look on the airport stand.
The Vehicle
Main Terminal Structure
(photo before the current work on the mobility in front of the airport,the color of the Terminal are still the same)The main structure of Trieste Airport is an example of linear and efficient airport architecture. The terminal was designed to minimize travel times, with a horizontal design, parallel to the runway.
From the outside of the Airport, you can arrive to the bridge connecting the Airport to the Intermodal Hub (Bus and train station).
The gate are overlook the stand and the runway, so the passenger will see their plane landing and taxing to the stand.

Cargo Area
The Cargo area of Trieste Airport is located at the eastern end of the airport complex. Although less visible to passengers, it is a key logistics hub for the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, serving as an air bridge to the region’s industrial districts and Eastern European markets. Even if after the Covid-19 the Cargo didn’t keep increasing very much, but there are still some cargo plane landing here, especially of big-size, llike Il-76 and An-124 sometime![]()
The Cargo Area extend up to 2.800 square meters, Thx to the Long runway, TRS is able to operate big plane, such the 747-F and the Antonov family, The Cargo Structure is also dotated of:
refrigerator cells
DGR (Dangerous Goods egulation)
Caveau and Values Area
loading and unloading docks for trucks
customs and monopolies agency
Fast higway acces
Near Rail acces (only by truck rn)
Intermodal Hub
The Trieste Airport Intermodal Hub is the technological and logistical “bridge” connecting the airport to the rest of the world by land. Inaugurated in 2018, it is considered one of the best examples in Italy of integration between different modes of transport.
Pedestrian Footbridge, It connect directly the Airport to the parking lot, to the Bus station and to the Train Station.
The Railway Stop “Trieste Airport”, located on the Venice-Trieste line, it is a true integrated railway station. It has 2 rails, and it will connect the Airport to the other cities.
Bus Terminal / Bus Station, it have 16 stands for busses, that will connect all the territory, arriving even in Slovenia
, Austria
and Croatia
!
multi-storey car park, Integrated into the complex of the hub, it is a multi-level structure dedicated primarily to medium and long-term parking.
There is also a very wide parking zone
Fuel Storage
It is located near the Elifriulia area and the fire station. This location was chosen because It is located far from the passenger terminal (reducing the risk of accidents). It is easily accessible for heavy tankers arriving from outside via the perimeter road. It allows refueling vehicles to quickly enter the stand area. The depot is a fenced and guarded area, made up of Tank Farms that contain the 2 main types of fuel: Jet A-1 and AvGas 100LL.
Airport Fire Department
The airport fire station is positioned to the side and almost exactly in the middle of the runway, this placement is required by law: the Fire Brigade must be able to reach any point of the runway and infrastructure within 3 minutes of an emergency call.
Trieste-Ronchi dei Legionari Airport is classified as ICAO Category 7 for firefighting purposes (although it can be upgraded to Category 8 upon request to accommodate larger aircraft, such as long-haul charter flights or heavy cargo aircraft).
Other intresting details
- MD-82 I-DAWR, the “abandoned plane” In 2004 a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 of the ex-Alitalia, collided while Taxing with a truck of the airport, after the collision the plane presented damage on the right wing tip, after that, the plane was “parcked” near the runway, far from the terminal, and in real life it’s still there.
- Radome -Meteo Radar, Inside the airport zone, there’s this big “Ball” that is actually a Radome or Dome for the meteorology
- Old Buildings, just old military building, before being a civil-airport, the airport was a military airport, it was under control of the United Kingdom and the United States after WW2, they was abandoned between 1981-82
- The Eco-Friendly Airport, during 2024, the TRS airport decided to become a Carbon Neutral Airport before 2077, The airport use many electric ground vehicle, and installed many Solar panel (not visible on google maps, because the current photo of google maps are from 2023)

Unique Features or Challenges
TRS connect the Friuli Venezia Giulia oìto the rest of Europe, 1 unique feature of TRS is that at north there’s the Mountain (the Alps) meanqhile at South there’s the Sea (The Adriatic sea/Mediterranean). Another unique feature is the “Bora” a very strong wind that come from East, this can i nfluence the way the plane land, when this strong wind append, the plane have to land the pilot have to use the Crosswind landing.From the airport you can see the “Sacrario” of Redipuglia (sanctuary of Redipuglia) a WW1 sanctuary remembering the WW1 victim (4th and 5th photo).
