Zurich Airport / Flughafen Zürich

General Info: Zurich Airport is an airport situated in Zurich, Switzerland and is the largest and busiest in the country also being home to Swiss International Air Lines as well as a hub for Helvetic Airways and Chair Airlines. It serves much of the country’s international needs with good transport links across the country as well as surrounding regions of France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. The other 2 international airports in the country, that being Geneva and Basel, both have limited to no flights outside of Europe.
Zurich’s first airport was set up in 1909 at the Dübendorf airfield situated 5 miles South East of the current airport and 5 miles to the east of Zurich. Throughout the 20s and 30s this airfield was the site of both military and civil aviation with it being the home of Swiss’s predecessor Swissair from 1932.
Civil traffic paused in 1939 due to a small spat breaking out across the entire planet but traffic resumed, though limited, in September 1940. In March 1943, the government of the Canton of Zurich commissioned a study to find a suitable location for a proper airport. These included expanding the current space at Dübendorf airfield, however, this was advised against and instead a piece of military land with barracks was suggested between Kloten and Oberglatt 5 and a half miles north of the city with the idea being for 4 runways and a terminal building. This idea was put forwards from the civil engineering firm conducting the investigation to the government of the Canton of Zurich who asked for the costs to be reduced, though once this was done they then accepted the idea over another idea for an intercontinental airport near Bern and the plan was put forwards to the Federal Government, who approved the plan in late 1944 with the idea being that Basel, Bern and Geneva would all receive continental airports and Zurich Kloten being the main gateway to the country.
In 1945, the Federal Government sold the Artillery Barracks in Kloten to the Canton of Zurich for it to begin construction of the Intercontinental airport with the construction beginning in early 1946. In June 1948, the first runway, 10/28, was ready for use and the first flight, a Swissair DC-4, took off on the 14th bound for London. In November of the same year, the second runway was commissioned for operations, that being runway 16/34. The terminal building construction began in 1951 after many years of deliberation after the original 1946 construction beginning, with the building opening in April 1953.
