Thunderstorms in the Dallas area forced many flights to divert. I have a few questions.

  1. What happens when a flight lands at the airport it was diverted to?
  2. What if that airport happened to be the final destination for some passengers? (eg. FAT-DFW was diverted to ICT as seen below, what if ICT was the final distination after DFW)

I don’t work at the airport and honestly have no idea. But I think there are 2 options:

  1. the aircraft can fly on to the actual destination promptly (within 2 hours, for example).

  2. the aircraft is no longer airworthy or the destination airport cannot be approached for a long time, then hotel rooms are arranged for the passengers (free of charge) and the flight is continued to the destination as soon as possible.

I remember the blackout at Heathrow, the Qantas A380 from SIN landed in CDG and flew on to LHR 24 hours later. In the end, it’s also about the passengers who want to fly from London to Australia.

There can be many reasons for this, including medical emergencies, which usually allow the aircraft to continue its flight quickly. Technical problems with the aircraft or, as already mentioned, unexpected problems (weather) at the destination.

Not really, my girlfriend once had to divert to BFS after bad weather at DUB and was bused to DUB (not to mention if other passengers were living on the road from BFS to DUB and car parking at there destination than that will be a nightmare)

I think that’s mostly if it’s close like that. If I had my flight cancelled, say ATL-LHR they’d have to provide me a hotel OR get me on either a delta flight or get us to an American hub and they fly us home. Most likely a hotel though.

Thunderstorms are an interesting addition to a work day.

There are a few scenarios that are taken into account when diverting.

  1. Are we first able to carry enough fuel to have a few attempts at the destination airport. If we can, we will carry the fuel to give us the best chance to make the destination airport.
  2. A usual flight plan will cater for a few attempts at the destination, once that fuel is gone and you are approaching you MDF (minimum diversion fuel) figure, we will head to our nominated alternate.

When we have landed at our alternate, as crew we have looked at our FDP (flight duty period). This is most probably the most limiting factor as our flight duty will be coming to an end. If we have the extra time for a ā€œgas-and-goā€ we shall attempt to. If time is limited then unfortunately the alternate airport is where the flight finishes until the crew have had sufficient rest.

Logistically it starts getting ugly if we have to stop the flight at the unintended destination. That’s usually when ground crew take over and set up hotels etc.

Regarding the diverted airport being the final destination, that would be interesting to see through. If it was an international flight, I’m not inclined to think that it would be an option to get off at the diversion without there being appropriate customs etc available.

But in low-costs - bus.

Just by chance, ICT has a customs office. No international commercial flights, but private flights can come from outside the country. I’m not sure how that would work with a diverted intl flight. It also depends on what planes can land on the runways:

Direction Length Surface
ft m
1L/19R 10,302 3,140 Concrete
1R/19L 7,302 2,226 Concrete
14/32 6,301 1,921 Concrete

From ATL to LHR? Good luck

I haven’t mean flights from LHR to ATL.

Still not over continents. Or overseas

Maybe in future…
