:airplane: Special Features of the Convair 880:

1. High cruise speed:

It was one of the fastest commercial jets of its time.

Cruise speed: approximately 600 mph (Mach 0.88) — higher than its competitors.

2. Narrower design:

Slimmer and more aerodynamic fuselage (with capacity for 80 to 110 passengers, depending on the configuration).

This made it lighter and more efficient on lower-demand routes.

3. Powerful engines:

Equipped with four General Electric CJ-805-3 turbofans, a civilian version of the J79 military engine (used in the F-104 and B-58).

They produced high performance, but also high noise and fuel consumption.

4. High rate of climb:

Due to its power and lighter weight, the Convair 880 had excellent takeoff and climb performance.

5. Reinforced Structure:

Robust construction, typical of Convair, derived from its experience with military aircraft.

Variant Description

Convair 880-22 Basic production version, used by Delta Air Lines, TWA, and others.

Convair 880-22M (“Modified”) Improved version with extra fuel tanks and a higher maximum takeoff weight. It became the most common variant.

Convair 880T Cargo and executive transport version, with a custom interior (rare).

Convair 880 JetStar / Executive Some units were converted into business jets or used by governments and celebrities (e.g., Elvis Presley owned a Convair 880 named Lisa Marie).

:chart_decreasing: Trivia and Legacy

Only 65 units were produced (1959–1962).

Despite its impressive performance, high fuel consumption and maintenance costs led to its commercial failure.

The design served as the basis for the Convair 990 Coronado, a longer and even faster version.
