It was Japan’s first airliner produced after the end of WW2. So far, it is also the only domestic Japanese airliner to enter production.

Almost all YS-11s have been retired; as of 2020 one was in service with Conquest Air per the World Airliner Census (2020). Former operators include:
All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan Airlines (JAL), Japan TransOcean Air (JTA), Aerolinas Argentina, Aeromexico (as Aerolitoral), Philippine Airlines, Korean Air, China Airlines, American Eagle, Hawaiian Airlines, and branches of the JSDF. The most prominent operator was Piedmont Airlines.
