It is a medium-sized, short-haul turboprop airliner, available in both passenger and freighter variants.

:chart_increasing: Why should this aircraft be added?
It was the first large U.S. turboprop airliner built in the United States, designed to meet American Airlines’ need for a medium-range, short-haul airliner, and it served as a direct competitor in the medium-range passenger and cargo markets to the Douglas DC6 & DC7.

:airplane: Airlines that use it
As of January 2026, there are currently two operators of the aircraft, which are Air Spray & Buffalo Airways; both Canadian airlines currently operate a total of 14 L-188 Electras, with 12 L-188 Electras in service and the remaining 2 being parked.

In the United States, the Lockheed L-188 Electra was retired from virtually all US commercial service by the early 1970s, with the launch customer being American Airlines in 1959, followed by Eastern Air Lines, Braniff Airways, and Northwest Airlines.

The only European airline to order the type from Lockheed was KLM as they operated 12 L-188 Electras first entering in service in 1959 up until 1969.

In the Asia-Pacific, Air New Zealand flew the Electra on trans-Tasman flights with a fleet of 4 L-188 Electras entering in service 1965 up until 1972.

Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) and Ansett operated three Electras to fly between the Australian state capital cities, and later to Port Moresby.

Qantas also operated four Electras on its routes to Hong Kong and Japan, for a time with a fleet of 4 L-188 Electras from 1959 up until 1970.
