LUX - Luxembourg 🇱🇺

:round_pushpin: Airport Name and ICAO/IATA Code
Luxembourg “Findel” Airport (ICAO: ELLX / IATA: LUX)

:globe_showing_europe_africa: Location (City, Country)
Luxembourg City, Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg

:chart_increasing: Airport Type & Size
Serves as the sole international airport of Luxembourg. Recognised as a major cargo hub - 6th largest freight airport in Europe.[1] Single-runway[2] airport with Terminal A and B connected by footbridge, also has a Cargo Center, and a Business Aviation Center (private jet terminal).

Passenger stand sizes range from A to E, but cargo stand sizes range from A to F. The B748F is the only F airplane that could land at this airport. There are no single G stands at LUX.

:vertical_traffic_light: Why should this airport be added to World of Airports?
Adds a middle ground to WoA - a regional airport with major cargo operations (instead of a mega-hub [LHR], or a large cargo-hub [LEJ]). CargoLux, one of the world’s largest B747 operators has a hub at LUX, so precise timing and slot management would be key - facilitated by the new Scheduling System. As of now WoA lacks most of the fleet of Luxair, this airport would diminish this problem. Its location in Central Europe is perfect for short and medium pax routes but also perfect for long-haul cargo operations. A medium sized airport for the players that prefer smaller airports to huge airports.

:airplane_departure: Major Airlines & Routes
Hub to CargoLux, Luxair, and Luxembourg Air Rescue. Popular pax routes are Porto (OPO :portugal:), Lisbon (LIS :portugal:), Munich (MUN :germany:), Frankfurt (FRA :germany:), Amsterdam (AMS :netherlands:), and London (LCY :united_kingdom:). Popular cargo routes are Milan (MXP :italy:), Dubai (DWC :united_arab_emirates:), Zhengzhou (CGO :china:), Hong Kong (HKG :hong_kong_sar_china:), and Baku (GYD :azerbaijan:).

Luxair operates: B737-700, B737-800, B737 Max 8, DHC-8-400, and E195-E2.

CargoLux operates: B747-400F, and B747-8F

The common airplanes at LUX are B744F, B748F, B77LF, E190, DH8D, B738, B38M, E175, A320.

:world_map: Unique Features or Challenges
Snowy winters, and Low Visibility Autumns. Great views of Luxembourg-City when taking off from RW24. Scenic location. Different to other WoA one runway airports, LUX would not have long taxi times (like PRG), nor the impossibility to have more than one plane waiting for takeoff without causing the “closure” of the airport (like INN), or even the need to backtrack before takeoff or after landing (like SXM) - things that don’t make small airports as enjoyable as big ones. The closest airport(s) in WoA compared to LUX is CNN - from having several small airplanes, short taxi times, and even being a small airport itself. However, also very close to BRI gameplay wise, as BRI has a considerate cargo area, considering its size, a similar layout, the helicopter easter egg, and no backtrack.

Possible Easter Egg: Luxembourg Air Rescue uses LUX as an hub, with its helicopters and planes. The Easter Egg could be a LAR helicopter (just like INN and BRI).

:warning: This is an unofficial map, and is just a concept of what this idea could be once in the game. This does not mean this airport is coming to the game :warning:

ELLX possible map:

The plain map proposal. This is the area that shows up when the 3D Buildings is off.

ELLX Possible Map with Areas:

The airport area would be the must have, as it is the whole airport area. The aesthetic effect is to add some life to the plain map (trees, golf course, fields). The ALS area is exactly what the name says (some airports in WoA have them on the plain map - e.g. PRG). The aesthetic effect if ALS is added is just to make the map harmonious if the ALS area is added.

[the hilly terrain made it a challenge to design a map that would not be too large or/and have a weird shape]

ELLX Possible Cameras:

Possible locations of the cameras. The T1 would be ATC Camera, the T2 and T3 would be the Terminal Camera(s). This airport would have a difference to other airports as it could have 3 planespotting cameras, one for RW06 (the best one), the other for RW24, and the other for the maintenance area (could have 2 static B748F Cargolux - could be both Not Without My Mask livery, and Retro livery).

I appreciate the level of depth that went into making this post, hopefully we do see LUX in game one day!

Thank you so much for the feedback, it really means a lot.

Hopefully we do! Who knows, if I get lots of votes it becomes a generic airport.

Be great if we got Luxair B737-8 and B737-800

Yes, yes and yes! I suppose that will be added on the B737 remodel. Would definitely complete the Luxair fleet (besides the B737-700 and Embraer E195-E2)

And eventually Max 7 & Max 10.

After playing CNN for a while, I’ve been loving small one-runway airports. In fact I believe the closest WoA airport to LUX is exactly CNN - small airport, short taxi times, lots of small airplanes (DH8D, ART’s, etc.), and even the possibility of having big planes on international routes (MD11, A306, B757, etc.).

The only visible differences are that LUX supports F class airplanes and has more cargo stands.

Not to detract from your comment but I’d actually say BRI is more alike to LUX, at least visually. It just lacks the big cargo area.

Yeah, I totally forgot about BRI ngl. I have to agree with you on that, CNN still has the backtrack on the runway (depending on wind), while BRI has a bigger cargo area and overall more similarities to LUX. It is definitely a mix of both. Thank you!

I decided to image what the rewards by levelling up could look like, and even what generating contracts would be like. Text in bold are things not in game - like a plane, an airline or even an airport - text in italic are liveries not in game, but with a plane that is. “A concept, just for fun”

Rewards (Local, Regional, International)

Local:

Luxair DH8D to LCY - Local (frequent short flight)

Luxair B737 to OTP - Local (a longer but still “local” flight)

Regional:

KLM E175 to AMS - Regional (frequent short flight)

Air Dolomiti E195 to FRA - Regional (most flights)

Cargolux Italia B744F to MXP - Regional (short Cargolux flight)

TAP A319 to OPO - Regional (busiest route)

International:

Cargolux B748F to CGO - International (longest Cargolux flight)

Luxair B38M to DWC - International (longest Luxair flight + rare sight)

Luxair B74S to JNB - International (rare historic route)

Luxair F27 to LBG - Regional (first Luxair flight) - CDG could be used instead

Generating Contracts

Local:
Luxair - DH8D, E135, E145
could also generate: E295, B737, B738, B38M

Regional:
Luxair - E295, B737, B738, B38M

+ other European airlines

International:
Cargolux – B744F [1], B748F

Absolutely love this list, one of my favorite things about WoA airports is what rewarded contracts they have!

To add on to your list, I think you could also have a Lufthansa CRJ9 from MUN around level 5, a Turkish Airlines B38M to IST around Level 10-12, and a China Southern A359 from CGO around Level 30-35.

It’s also worthwhile remembering NGO has local 748F flights to the likes of HKG with NCA, so if you can get the cash you can start rolling them. Could have some limited regional Cargolux flights under the local tab as a local airline.

I just didn’t went further cause I was afraid the list would be too big. Those rewards would really make sense too!

Yes and China Eastern has weekly 787 flights!

Do they? I have not found anything…

Man, I really admire how much you want LUX in the game, you’ve put a ton of work into your request and your case. I really do hope we see it get added one day!

Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to help the people that really want this airport by organising every single feature request into this thread, and most importantly, I’ve been trying not to let this thread die off.
